kufta annI bought my horse Kufta from Yvonne, as well as boarded, and trained, at Red Moon Farm. The care Yvonne gives the horses is extremely rare and one of the best in the Northern VA area. The care of the horses is a top priority as that is her full time job and she lives on the farm all year. She is someone you can trust to provide expert knowledge and common sense, plus she has a genuine love for horses.

I was new to horse ownership when I bought my horse from Yvonne and she taught me many useful things about horse ownership and care that I will never forget. I worked in a full time demanding job, so could not always be there but I never had to worry about my horse’s well being, scheduling farrier visits, vet visits, vaccines, as she handled everything. She provided excellent training and I felt like I had a successful start back in the saddle after 10+ years of not riding. She helped me gain new confidence in the saddle again and exposed me to the sport of eventing, and the importance of dressage training as a base. I will always recommend Yvonne and Red Moon Farm to anyone looking in the Northern Virginia area for top notch training and/or boarding.

Yvonne has helped me become a stronger and more confident rider. Her lessons are tailored specifically to each of her rider's needs, and her professional and personable attitude make every lesson enjoyable and challenging.

ashleyI had the wonderful opportunity to work with Yvonne at the Maryland Adult Eventing Camp two years in a row. The first year I was in her XC group, and the second year I was in her show jumping group.  I found her to be insightful, motivating, and confidence building. I enjoyed working with her so much, I signed up for one of the mini camps she  offered at her lovely farm in Berryville. This was my first time working with her in the Dressage arena. Yvonne had a wonderful way of using descriptive visuals to help me understand what I was trying to achieve in the various movements. I left each day with a treasure trove of knowledge and lots of fun new exercises to work on.

I hired Yvonne to be the Dressage clinician at the Combined Training clinic I hosted at my farm. She arrived on time and enthusiastic to get to work with some new students. Everyone gave me wonderful feedback on their sessions with her and all left smiling ear to ear. I look forward to the next time I get to work with Yvonne as I always come away feeling motivated and productive.

Gillian Clissold, Owner/Rider of 2003 USEA Mare of the Year "Sportscar": “I have known Yvonne Lucas for over seven years. In 2004 and 2005 she coached me in dressage on my Advanced level eventing mare Sportscar. I have also watched her teach students with horses very different from my own.

Her teaching style is patient, her tone encouraging and her level of technical knowledge high. She can adapt her teaching to a wide variety of temperaments and abilities. I have also seen Yvonne bring a number of horses up through the eventing levels, and admire her tact and ability to adjust her training program to suit each horse.”

Cheryl Microutsicos: “Yvonne, thank you so much for the great time in Florida. It was a wonderful experience and I learned so much! I still remember and practice some of the things we worked on.

Can't wait until you have your next 'camp' down in Ocala. I'll be there!”

From 2015:

Yvonne was recommended to me from a friend and she has been coaching me and helping me train my horses since 2008. From the first lesson, she provided me with many “lightbulb” moments and helped me to improve my riding and my confidence. She is a wonderful teacher for all levels, and coached me in my very first shows in both dressage and jumping.

I grew from being a beginner rider to jumping more, trying cross country jumps at Gordonsdale, and enduring more challenging trail rides. She has vast experience in all levels of riding and horse care and management. Her technique focuses on happy and confident horses and riders, and she has a wonderful balance of both kindness and firmness when needed, all while helping riders advance their skills and athleticism. As my needs and skills changed, she also helped me find my next horse partners, and helped me with train and overcome significant challenges with a more difficult horse. Her knowledge, experience, and consistent care for both horse and rider have been invaluable to me in reaching my riding goals.

From 2012:

“I started riding with Yvonne a few years ago, and she has truly changed my riding. She has given me the physical and mental skills and confidence to achieve goals that a few years ago, I had only dreamed of. I remember watching other riders with hope and a bit of envy, wondering if I would ever 'get there'.

Yvonne helped me and my horse build the technical and foundation skills necessary for dressage and jumping and she coached me through my first show. Her help and advice was pivotal in us earning our first ribbon at our very first show! She was also instrumental in helping me achieve my goals outside of the ring during trail lessons. She helped expose my horse and me to different terrain, trails and slopes and again gave me the confidence to ride more advanced trails at varyious gaits. I now embark on many more trail rides and do so much more confidently and relaxed.  Whether in or out of the ring, she teaches with encouragement and motivation, and just enough firmness to help me move beyond my own fears and skill “blocks”.

Yvonne’s approaches and techniques have improved both my own fitness and my horse’s. In addition, she always shows concern for the horse. I am so grateful for her kindness toward my gelding each and every week as he is older and has some limitations, but she continues to help us reach our potential and she has brings out the best in both of us. She is fun, kind and knowledgeable and I look forward to each and every lesson with her. My horse and I have both grown and changed so positively, and I couldn’t have done it without Yvonne.”

Yvonne has coached me as a show jumper, working to improve my flat work in order to make my horse a better jumper. We have competed very successfully in the Adult Jumper divisions at several 'A' rated shows. Yvonne is a great person to have on the ground to help you ride confidently through an otherwise impossible show jumping course.”

Jaime Greear, student: “Our sport of Eventing has truly evolved into a sport of three phases. We no longer just need a brave horse that can run and jump, but our horses also have to do well in dressage and show jumping by being balanced, supple, agile and responsive.

Yvonne is a great trainer for the evolution of our sport - not only does she know what it takes to get around a cross country course successfully, but she has the ability to improve your dressage and show jumping. She has been a huge help in giving both me and my horse Simon more confidence, and has helped us improved all three of our phases. Yvonne noticed right away that I got nervous as the fences became higher, and she helped me calm my nerves which in turn improved my show jumping (Simon slowed down and stopped rushing).

With her help Simon and I were able to move up to Training level this past year (something neither Simon nor I had done before), and Yvonne made sure we were more than ready for the challenge! Yvonne has helped Simon and me in so many ways I could write a book, but the one thing I have to say is that she truly cares about her students and their horses. So if you are serious about wanting to learn, and want a great all-around trainer, then Yvonne is the right trainer for you.”

(Pictured, Yvonne schooling Clipper)Mary K Whitmer, client: “I sent my young warmblood “Clipper” to Yvonne for training after a back injury made it difficult for me to continue riding him. I had checked out many trainers, but selected Yvonne based on her experience in dressage, eventing, and jumpers with many different types of horses, and her willingness to tailor a training program to meet his needs.

(This was the once-in-a-lifetime horse that I bred and trained myself, and I had real concerns about sending him away.) I was extremely pleased with the results. Under Yvonne’s program, with her positive and patient but firm approach, Clipper blossomed. He progressed very quickly both over fences and in dressage, gaining confidence as he learned, while staying happy in his work. When I made the tough decision to sell him, Yvonne understood my concerns about finding the “right” buyer, and he is now in a great new home. I would definitely send another horse to Yvonne for training and/or sale, and wholeheartedly recommend her.”

Dorothy Smith: “Yvonne combines the best of what a student should seek in an instructor, displaying both an aptitude for explanation and a unique ability to address each rider's personal needs.

As a competitor, she is strong in all three phases, but it is my personal belief that a rider like Yvonne, who has a deep background and love of dressage, makes for the ultimate modern eventer ― capable of the instant response required in dressage, and therefore able to ride the very technical questions that are being asked on today's courses. This ability translates directly from the instructor to the student, and Yvonne's students exhibit these same qualities.

If you are looking for a great coach, one that is positive in her approach, one that will guide you to whatever level you want to reach, and one that has a depth to her instruction, then seek out Yvonne.”
